FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

These are some of the most common questions we get from you guys. But, if you have any other questions feel free to email us at MORE QUESTIONS and we will try to get back to you with an answer.

  • Yes, you can. Anyone, willing and interested to try handball, and have the desire to learn and play is welcome to join our club.

  • No, we don’t pay players or coaches. Many of our members, in the past, were paid to play handball. The reason is that they played in Europe where handball is a professional sport. In New York, handball is an amateur sport and a hobby for most people.

  • We practice three times a week. For more details follow this link -> practice time

  • Our annual membership fee is $365. You also need to register with USATH if you plan on playing matches during the season. That fee is $70 paid to USATH.

  • Your membership fee is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the law.

For $365 you get the following:

    - Three times a week practices from mid-September to mid-June
    - Opportunity to compete in Northeast League
    - Opportunity to compete at other National tournaments
    - Opportunity to represent NYC HC at the US Nationals or another big event in May
    - Purchase of goals, handballs, stickum etc.
    - Meeting people from all over the world and making new friends (PRICELESS)

(Each member of NYC Team Handball Club needs to become a member of USATH separately and pay a $70 fee directly to USATH which allows you to play in sanctioned USATH events, and provides general liability insurance during practices and matches)

  • Yes, you can. The cost per trial practice is $30 and needs to be paid before each session either by Venmo, or cash. You also need to sign some forms.

  • If you have one trial session (you pay $30) and decide to join as a full-time member, it will count towards the $365. Therefore, you will pay $335.

However, if you need two or more paid trial sessions before making a decision, only one of the trial sessions ($30) will count towards the $365 membership fee.

  • First, you need to become a member of USATH and pay $70 for the license to play in the sanctioned matches by USATH. NYC HC full-time members have the first right to be selected for the teams. If we need additional players, short-term members will be invited to play.

  • To switch clubs during the season, players currently affiliated with the New York City Team Handball Club must adhere to the following concise guidelines:

    • Notify the club and coach of New York City Team Handball Club at least 30 days prior to the intended club change.

    • Submit a formal request for club transfer to the USATH technical director through the designated platform.

Once the player switches clubs, they are strictly prohibited from attending any New York City Team Handball Club practices or returning back to the club for that season.

If a player decides to return back to the club they need to wait until beginning of next season to join as a member.

The player must return all club equipment in their possession during their final practice.

    Membership fee is non-refundable.

  • Sure you can. Follow Player Transfer Rules. However, the membership fee is not-refundable.

  • Our season begins in mid-September. If you join the club, let’s say anytime between January to March, the membership fee is going to be $300. Of course, you always have the option of paying for individual practice sessions at $30 per practice. If you plan on playing in any of the competitions you need to register with USATH for an individual membership which costs $70.

  • We play monthly matches starting October, until May. From New York City to West Point, Boston, DC, Chicago, San Francisco, Montreal, and other cities we compete in different tournaments.

  • Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. The only things we require are sneakers and athletic attire, like track pants or shorts and a T-shirt.

  • No, unfortunately, all our gyms are school gyms without access to showers or locker rooms.

  • No, all members/players cover their own travel, lodging and food expenses.

  • Most players will get an opportunity to play matches during the season. Depending on their level of play some players get more playing time than others. However, there is no guarantee the club or coach will play you if they believe at that moment another player will be a better fit and will give us a better opportunity to win as a team. The better you get the higher your chances of playing more minutes.

  • We as a club don’t have that requirement, even though 95% of our members are vaccinated. However, venues that we compete in might request vaccination records from each player that will compete. West Point Military Academy is one place you must show proof of vaccination, otherwise you are not allowed to enter the complex.
